England's future is under the spotlight today as the Under 21s play Romania in the European Championship play-offs.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere is likely to play a key role but the Arsenal teenager's days with the youngsters are numbered as he has also been included in Fabio Capello's senior squad to the Wembley clash with Montenegro.

So the nation now turns to a fresh crop of Under 19 players, to see if the bruised dreams of glory can yet come true.

Josh McEachran

The 17-year-old tipped as the next Wilshere is starting to get first-team opportunities at Chelsea after starring in their FA Youth Cup triumph last season.

Midfielder McEachran was the first player to appear in the Champions League who was born after it was created in its current form.

Although his parents are both Scottish, McEachran grew up in Oxford and was fast-tracked into England's Under 19 side this summer.

Ross Barkley

At just 16, Barkley is set to follow in the footsteps of Jack Rodwell – Everton's most recent midfield prodigy – at the academy that also nurtured the young Wayne Rooney.

The versatile youngster has also played as a striker for the youth team at Goodison Park and is expected to make the first team by the end of the year.

He scored for England against Northern Ireland when he was only 14, in an Under 16 Victory Shield game in October 2008.
Connor Wickham

Manchester United have already shown interest in Ipswich Town's burly 17-year-old, who measures up at 6ft 4in, 14 stone, and has been compared to Wayne Rooney.

Wickham has made 38 league appearances, playing for Reading before Ipswich, until his father's job with the army forced him to move clubs.

The centre-forward scored the winner in England's 2-1 defeat of Spain as they clinched the Under 17 European Championship title in May.

The 18-year-old signed for Liverpool from Charlton for £1.7million this summer and has made 50 first-team appearances since the age of 16.

In January 2009, he became Charlton's youngest scorer, against Norwich in the FA Cup third round, 55 days before his 17th birthday.

Seven months later, the grounded midfielder rejected a spectacular £3.5m offer from Chelsea.

Liverpool swooped on Wisdom to take him to their academy from Bradford City when he was only 14.

He helped them to the FA Youth Cup final at just 15, and with increasing size and strength, scored the first goal in England's Under 17 European Championship triumph earlier this year.n

The 17-year-old was a fixture in the Liverpool team that reached the 2009 FA Youth Cup final and the England Under 16 side that won the 2008 Victory Shield.
