Schuster blast at ugly Liverpool
REAL MADRID coach Bernd Schuster last night launched a stunning, unprovoked attack on Rafa Benitez and Liverpool.
He branded the style of the Premier League leaders both ‘unattractive’ and ‘ugly’.
The arrogant German savaged the Kop after confessing boss Benitez has transformed them into one of only two teams he believes can prevent the Spanish giants winning their 10th European Cup in Moscow on May 21.
Schuster rapped: “Liverpool rely on an unattractive style of football. They are an ugly team to play.
“Look how they really gave Barcelona a going-over last season, when they knocked them out of the Champions League. That’s what I mean.
“I want the Champions League because it’s a trophy I was so close to winning as a player with Barcelona under Terry Venables.
“We reached the final in 1986 and lost to Steaua Bucharest on penalties. Then I also lost in the semis when I was playing for Real Madrid.
“I would rate Liverpool, like AC Milan, as our major rivals for the Champions League this season. They are clubs which never tire of winning big trophies again and again.
“But my personal preference, if I could choose the best of all our European rivals and transplant them to Madrid, would be to take the Manchester United attack and graft it on to the Chelsea defence. That would be the perfect combination.”
Schuster’s comments about Benitez’s ‘ugly’ team can be taken as a backhanded compliment to someone he regards as a potential rival for the Madrid job.
Benitez indicated last season he had received a major offer to take over at the Bernabeu, just as Schuster began negotiations with Madrid president Ramon Calderon.
The German has started well at the club but is aware if he fails there will be increased pressure to move for their former youth coach once again.
Schuster believes his summer shopping has made Madrid extremely strong and likely to add that amazing 10th European Cup to their trophy room.
Grabbing Gabriel Heinze from United, despite the failure to capture Michael Ballack from Chelsea, means Schuster is convinced he can emulate Fabio Capello in winning La Liga and also add the Champions League.
Schuster added: “Signing Heinze when he wasn’t allowed to move to Liverpool took a weight off my shoulders. We were desperate for exactly that type of player.
“He’s aggressive, he’s a tough defender and we needed somebody who played from his left foot.
“As for Arjen Robben, the mess which Chelsea made of allowing us to sign him has left him without a proper pre-season. No matter how hungry he is to make his debut, Robben needs this international break to train hard and get ready for action with us later in the month.
“We tried to sign Michael Ballack from Chelsea too. But the major problem was we discovered his agent thinks he should also earn as much as a top player.
“Ballack arrived on a free transfer at Chelsea from Bayern, therefore his salary is massive. But his agent also wanted £1million if the player was going to move to Madrid.
“These problems made signing the player impossible.”
Meanwhile, Real legend Raul believes Liverpool’s £21million record signing Fernando Torres has discovered a ‘new air’ since joining the Merseysiders from Atletico Madrid two months ago.
The latest Kop idol has already bagged three goals, including a double in last Saturday’s 6-0 demolition of Derby. And Raul is convinced life in England is making ‘El Nino’ a better footballer.
Raul, 30, once linked with Liverpool himself, said: “There is a different air about him now. He looks like he’s enjoying the experience.”
“With a good coach like Rafa Benitez, and with the help of his Spanish team-mates, the process of adapting will be easier. There is no doubt he will be a huge success in the Premier League.”
